Shoot, Kill, Spin, Repeat - A look at the standard playbook of America’s murderous police.
It’s a story we see all too often… Police shoot and kill someone, release photos or videos with strategically placed red circles, and the media dutifully perpetuates how the police have framed what it is we think the photos or videos show us.
The most recent case of murder at the hands of police and selective, post-murder propaganda, is the case of 17 year-old Kristiana Coignard. Kristiana was shot and killed in the lobby of the Longview Police Department on January 22nd in Longview, Texas. Police released the video, without audio, on January 28th only after a campaign launched by the hacktivist collective Anonymous under the hashtag Operation Stop Lethal Force On Children (#OpSLFOC).

CALL TO ACTION: Feb 7 at 12:00pm to Feb 8 at 12:00am 302 West Cotton Street, Longview, TX https://www.facebook.com/events/345909478930412/
Even liberal media outlets such as Think Progress are using the police enhanced media in articles questioning the actions of police. (See image – Side by side.)

Longview Police claim that in the video at 10:52 we can “see” the butcher’s knife Kristiana was allegedly wielding. They have helpfully enhanced this one frame out the more than 23 minutes of video– slightly enlarged with adjusted lighting and a most helpful red balloon – and ensured that this one frame is the video’s thumbnail so as to pre-frame what we think we will see.
And honestly, with this suggestion and help of their little red balloon, we do think we see a knife at 10:52 in the video, but what about the minutes and seconds BEFORE and AFTER 10:52?
Do they support this preconception that has been imported into our psyche by the Longview Police Department? When we look at the surrounding moments we see NOTHING else to support the “butcher’s knife” theory. In fact, in the moments before 10:52 we clearly do NOT see any knife whatsoever. We do however see that Officer Derr, even with the employ of classic, trench coat wearing pervert techniques, had control of Kristiana NUMEROUS times and had numerous opportunities to use proper police procedures to not only subdue, but restrain Kristiana. He did not.
So, what if the moments before and before are also taken in to account and likewise enhanced? What do we see then?
After 1 full minute of video of an empty lobby, we see Kristiana enter the station. For the next six and a half minutes we see Kristiana standing around, looking around and occasionally checking her cell phone after using the self-service phone in the station lobby. For the next three minutes we see officer Glenn Derr grab and wrestle with Kristiana in a manner more like a perverted sexual assault rather than any suspect restraining procedures we have ever seen. Officer Derr appears to grab her hands, her arms, her breast, shove her head in to his crotch, grind his crotch in to her, and, finally climbs on top of her after throwing her to the ground.
We believe taking note and keeping our attention in areas not enhanced by the Longview Police Department are MUCH more instructive. So let’s take a look and enhance what we see in the moments BEFORE and AFTER the one frame out of the 23 minute video police selectively have used to further their narrative.
10:07 – Officer Derr struggles with Kristiana who he has pinned to a bench. Officer Derr reaches towards Kristiana’s hand. The same hand police will later claim in their enhanced photo contained a butcher’s knife.
10:15 – We see Kristiana’s right hand. No knife.
10:16 – As Officer Derr and Kristiana struggle, we get an excellent side view that should show either some kind of bulge or a blade if there was in fact a butcher’s knife in Kristiana’s right hand. Instead, we see NO KNIFE.
10:51 – One second before the time the enhanced police photo was pulled, we see Kristiana on the ground. Is there a knife? We can’t tell. Officer Duffie who has just arrived, but is just feet away from Kristiana has his hands at his sides. No weapon drawn.
10:51 (b) Just fractions of a second before police enhanced frame is pulled. Knife? Uncertain, but again Officer Duffie is just feet away from Kristiana with his hands at his side. No weapon drawn.
10:52 – Moment of police enhanced photo that does appear to show something, but could also be a shadow or Kristiana’s hand on the floor. Knife? Can’t tell. If there WAS a knife… why does the second responding officer, Gene Duffie, stand with his arms at his side for 12 seconds? If Kristiana was wielding a butcher’s knife, especially a large one as the enhanced police photo seems to indicate, why does he stand there just looking at her for 12 seconds before drawing his weapon at 11:02?
10:52 – Police enhanced frame side by side with raw still. Knife?
10:52 (b) – Despite what police claim is very obviously a butcher’s knife being clearly in view, Officer Duffie, who is actually closet to Kristiana, is standing with his hands at his side. No weapon drawn.
10:52 (c) – Kristiana gets up – according to police – she would be clearly wielding a butcher’s knife at this point. Officer Duffie, just feet away – hands at his sides. No weapon drawn.
10:52 (d) – Officer Duffie – hands at his sides. No weapon drawn.
At this point we wish to point out that we are NOT criticizing Officer Duffie for not drawing his weapon on Kristiana. Knife or not, perhaps Officer Duffie was attempting not to inflame the situation any further? Perhaps Officer Duffie was trying to think of and provide a way the situation could be ended peacefully? Without the audio we have no way of knowing. Longview PD should release the audio immediately so we can all have a FULL accounting of what actually happened.
10:53 – Officer Duffie – hands at his sides. No weapon drawn.
10:54 – Officer Duffie – hands at his sides. No weapon drawn.
10:56 – Officer Duffie – hands at his sides. No weapon drawn.
11:00 – Officer Duffie – hands at his sides. No weapon drawn.
11:02 – Officer Duffie has quietly pulled his weapon from its holster, yet he is not pointing it at Kristiana.
11:07 – There are now three officers in the lobby all with their weapons out. Officer Derr has had his gun trained on Kristiana for 30 seconds now. Officer Duffie, who has now been on scene for 15 seconds, still has his weapon at his side. Arriving officer Grace Bagley arrived at the scene with her weapon drawn, but also is not pointing it at Kristiana.
11:08 – Kristiana charges towards Officer Derr, who looks to be easiest to get around if one is thinking of escape. We cannot see what if anything is in Kristiana’s hand.
11:08 (b) – Cannot see if anything is in Kristiana’s hands, but we can tell that her hands are down about waist height. Not an angle you would attack someone with a knife.
11:08 (c) – There does not appear to be anything in Kristiana’s hands and her hands are BELOW her waist. Again, not at a height or angle one could attack a person using a knife.
11:09 – Officers begin firing.
Kristiana goes to the ground immediately and appears motionless. One officer steps in to apparently handcuff her. No officer attempted to provide any medical aid. Medical help would not arrive for another six minutes. According to police, Derr fired at Coignard three times and Bagley, who had been on the scene less than five seconds, fired twice. Kristiana was reportedly struck four times.
Now we can’t say for certain what happened that January evening. We were not there. But, we reject taking the police and their framing of events at the word. Unlike the Longview Police Department, we have no motive here other than learning the truth of what happened and having a dialogue that may prevent such tragedies from occurring again. As part of that dialogue we ask that the Longview PD release the audio and that a fully transparent review be carried out by Texas DPS.
Longview PD has said video WITH audio DOES exist. Why did they release the video without the audio? #ForeverSilent Kristiana may not be if and when police decide to release the audio of the last minutes of her young life.

OTHER RECENT CASES OF POLICE MURDER & PROPAGANDA
In the case of Tamir Rice, Cleveland PD, slowed down the video of Tamir’s murder to about two frames per second. This dramatically changed the speed at which events were perceived and explained and ultimately “justified” in the media. In reality, young Tamir was shot in less than two seconds of nearly being run over by the responding cruiser. Events, when viewed at the speed they actually occurred left many speechless and in shock.
Following Tamir’s murder, Cleveland PD added red circles they claim proved their version of events.

Note: Most media outlets have removed the Cleveland PD propaganda from their sites. We did find one outlet where it was still available, the police produced propaganda is the SECOND video in the list. http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/cleveland-metro/tamir-rice-shooitng-video-warning-cleveland-police-release

And of course there is what police choose to NOT release at all. For instance, Cleveland PD not only failed to include footage of Cleveland PD tackling Tamir’s 14 year old sister to the ground, they fought its release.

In the case of Antonio Martin, police opted for a re-cropped, high contrast, zoomed-in frame with a white balloon to advance their narrative of events. If you are to believe what the enhanced video shot from a minimum of 75 feet away shows we estimate that Antonio would had to have had a Dirty Harry style .357 Magnum not the .9mm “recovered” at the scene.
The police “enhancement” does not take in to account unmovable features of the frame – like shadows from the road and sidewalk in the background and also happen to contribute to what police tell us was a gun.

Police also only released video from two of the over 30 cameras on the scene and never said if their was any video from the cruiser’s dashcam. Of, course the media didn’t even ask for the other footage.
Our earlier examination of angle two of Antonio’s murder appears to clearly show Antonio had a cellphone not a gun in his hand when he was shot and killed.

“WINNING” WITH THE MEDIA – FERGUSON, MO.
During the tense months following the murder of Mike Brown by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson, how did the St. Louis Police Academy respond? Maybe a seminar on interacting with communities of color? Extra training on what to do when dealing with unarmed suspects? Perhaps a discussion on the proper use of force and less-than lethal options available to officers? Nope. They staged a seminar on how to win the public relations war in the wake of an officer involved shooting.

These are events we have seen too many times and will likely see again and again. Police shoot – kill – and then spin the media. Rarely pausing to reflect. In fact, police unions are becoming more and more openly combative which is decidedly NOT helpful.
The myth is that police risk their lives every day. That the police are well trained. Statistically speaking, being a police officer is one of the safest jobs you can have in America. If you’re a fisherman, a truck driver, even a landscaper – you have a more dangerous job than a police officer.
LINK MOST DANGEROUS JOBS IN AMERICA: http://www.ranker.com/list/the-most-dangerous-jobs-in-america/american-jobs
And when you consider that 90% of work-related deaths occur in the private sector and that of work place deaths are at the hands of disgruntle co-workers or family members, one could argue that you’re quiet little office job is more dangerous than that of a police officer.
We should all be thinking for ourselves and question the narratives the state puts forth and challenge the corporate media to do the same.
The cycle of death and spin only to kill again must be stopped.
